I've been seeing more young people and children who present with concerns about their gender identity. Parents ask me to see their children because they hear through the grape vine that I do not make assumptions about the child because they have these concerns. Some therapists who "specialize" in "treating" children with concerns about gender will tell parents that they can confirm or deny that a children requires medical intervention. They say they can tell if a child is "really" trans and whether their child can be best helped by medical interventions. I do not necessarily see the child's concern about their gender as something to be fixed by psychotherapy and because I am not a medical doctor I have no ability to determine whether a child needs medical interventions. Instead I focus on the whole child. What causes them pain and anxiety? What are they struggling with at home and at school? Are they being bullied? What are their questions about gender? What about their gender identity are they struggling with? Are they depressed? Do they have friends?
